How to Read Cannabis Product Labels in Washington DC
Product labels can help registered patients compare cannabis products more accurately. Whether browsing flower, edibles or vape products, review the information supplied by the manufacturer and required under applicable DC rules.
What to review
Look for the producer, package size, cannabinoid content, ingredients and warnings where applicable. For edibles, pay attention to serving information and delayed onset; do not take more simply because effects are not immediate.
Questions to ask
If something on a label is unclear, ask staff to explain the listed information. Do not assume strain names or broad indica/sativa categories guarantee specific results.
Cannabinoid content
THC and CBD are usually shown as a percentage for flower and concentrates, and in milligrams for edibles and topicals. You may also see THCA, which converts to THC when heated.
Quantity
The net weight or volume of what’s inside the package.
Serving information
For edibles, the label gives milligrams per serving and the number of servings in the package, so check how much one piece contains.
Ingredients
Edibles and topicals list ingredients and allergens. Check these if you have dietary needs or sensitive skin.
Manufacturer and batch
Who made the product, and a batch or lot number that ties it to its lab test.
Warnings and instructions
Read them before use. They’re required for a reason.
