How to Buy Cannabis Through a Licensed Dispensary in Washington DC
DC’s cannabis rules confuse a lot of people, especially visitors. Here is the short version in five steps. Last reviewed: October 2026.
Step 1: Work out which route applies to you
- DC resident aged 21 or over: self-certify online.
- DC resident under 21: get a practitioner’s recommendation.
- Visitor with a medical registration from one of the 39 jurisdictions DC recognises: use it.
- Any other visitor: apply for a temporary DC registration.
Step 2: Register

Step 3: Choose a licensed retailer
Check the store in ABCA’s directory.
Step 4: Bring the right documents
Your registration and an unexpired government photo ID. Virginia patients also need their practitioner’s written certification.
Step 5: Browse and buy
Look at the live menu, order ahead if you like, and pick up at 610 H St NW. Registered patients can buy up to eight ounces in a rolling 30-day period.
