DC Medical Cannabis Self-Certification Explained
Since 2022, DC adults aged 21 and over have been able to self-certify for the medical cannabis program. Here’s what that means in practice. Last reviewed: October 2026.
What self-certification means
When you apply for a patient registration, you state yourself that you’re using cannabis for medical purposes. You don’t need a recommendation from a doctor or other practitioner.
Who can self-certify
Adults aged 21 and over. Applicants aged 18 to 20 still need a recommendation from an authorized healthcare practitioner.
Is this the same as recreational sales?
No. DC’s licensed stores are still medical cannabis retailers, and you still need a registration to buy. Self-certification made getting that registration simpler. It didn’t turn dispensaries into recreational shops.
How to do it
Apply through the myABCA portal. See our registration guide for the full process, including options for visitors.
After you register
Bring your registration and photo ID to a licensed dispensary such as Jars DC, 610 H St NW.
