Visiting a Washington DC Dispensary From Virginia
Virginia patients can shop in DC, but there’s one extra requirement that catches people out. Last reviewed: October 2026.
The Virginia rule
According to ABCA, Virginia patients must bring the written certification form completed by their authorized healthcare practitioner, along with an unexpired government-issued ID. A photo ID on its own isn’t enough.
No written certification?
Apply online for a temporary DC patient registration through the myABCA portal. It’s digital and can be used as soon as you receive it.
Getting here from Northern Virginia
- Yellow Line from Alexandria, Crystal City or Pentagon City: direct to Gallery Place-Chinatown.
- Blue, Orange or Silver Line from Arlington: change to the Red Line at Metro Center and ride one stop.
- VRE to Union Station: then two stops on the Red Line.
Heading home
Don’t take cannabis across the river. Carrying it across state lines is against federal law.
