Indica vs. Sativa vs. Hybrid: A DC Cannabis Shopping Guide
Almost every dispensary menu sorts flower into indica, sativa and hybrid. The labels help you browse, but they don’t tell the whole story.
Where the terms come from
Indica and sativa began as botanical names for plants with different shapes. Indica plants are short and broad-leaved. Sativa plants are tall with narrow leaves.
What hybrid means
A hybrid is bred from both. After decades of cross-breeding, nearly all modern cannabis is a hybrid to some degree.
Why the label isn't a guarantee
Two products sold as indica can have very different chemical profiles. The category alone can’t tell you how a product will feel for you, and people respond differently.
What to check too
- Cannabinoid content
- Terpene profile
- Cultivar and producer
Our flower guide and label guide explain these.
